FBAUL-IST GAMING 2018

PROJECT N

Welcome to Project N!
Working in this game there are four of us:
André Soares (IST) - Development Team/Team’s Spokesman
Gonçalo Soares (IST) - Development Team
João Bernardo Alves (IST) - Development Team
Sílvia Pinho (FBAUL) - Lead Artist
Now, the game itself is a 1v1 arena shooter.
It’s meant to be best of 3/5 rounds, each one lasting up to 5 minutes.
What makes it special? Its armour system.
You start the game by picking one of each armour pieces - helmet, chest piece, arm pieces and boots. Each piece gives you different skills - for example there’s boots that make you run faster or jump higher, and heavy armour for the head and chest gives you extra protection, but also slows you down. That being said, if your opponent shoots you on your armour, they decay and eventually break, putting you at risk of receiving damage.
As for the weapons, you start with an infinite ammo pistol, but one that deals with low damage. You can then pick up different weapons, that will spawn across the arena.
The game will be developed using Unreal, and the art for the game will be made with Blender, in a sci-fi style.

And that’s all for this introduction. I’ll leave you with a first version of the logo:

Hello gamers,
Welcome back to Project N!

Since the last time I checked in with you guys, I’ve been working on the main character for the game.

This is my first time using Blender for 3D modelling, and I’ve got to say it’s been a quite fun (yet slow) learning process. I’m already thinking of potential other games I could do in 3D, which is odd to me since I’ve always been more of a 2D game fan.
Along the way I’ve encountered some issues, mostly with the geometry part of the modelling process, but with some Youtube tutorials and Google searches (Blender seems to have a nice community forum, where many of my issues were addressed) everything fell into place.

This is how my man looks so far:

He definitely has a nicely sculpted front so far (mainly in the chest), but needs work done in the back, and in the limbs (I’d like to give him all 5 fingers in both hands, and a nicely shaped head).
Once again, I’m a newbie to all this 3D world, but also really interested in it, and will only get better (and quicker) with time. That being said, hopefully next time I’ll have more to show you, possibly including some armor!

Until next time,
Sílvia Pinho

In these past few weeks my man has evolved a bit - he now has fingers, feet and a proper head and face!
The feet and the face are not 100% well defined, but I figured since they’re going to be covered with boots and a helmet I shouldn’t worry nor spend too much time on them.

When it came to the armor part, I encountered some issues once again. I somehow managed to delete a brush and still haven’t found a way to bring it back to life, but that didn’t stop me and I still got to sculpt an inicial shape for the helmet and the chest piece.

Other than that, I’m currently trying to learn about animating with blender, and I’ll be looking at some weapon ideas and possibly some tutorials in the near future.
That’s all for now. Talk to you in a few weeks.

Hey there again,
These past few weeks I’ve been trying to focus on quantity over quality - which is odd since I’m used to doing the exact opposite. But since MOJO is approaching quickly, I thought I’d do the general shape of things first and then if there’s any time left I’ll go back and perfect things.
I did make some tweaks to the chest piece as you can see here:

Along with that, I created the arm piece and the boots:

As for the weapons, I’ll be working on those next, since the armor was a priority for my group at this point.
I’m still encountering struggles with blender along the way, but I’m learning with them.
This update was shorter, but next one will be bigger and better, since it will be after MOJO. Talk to you then!

Hello there (one last time),
These past few weeks I learned how to paint on Blender. But to do that, I had to first learn how I could lower the amount of polygons in my mesh (without losing quality), since I was working with an extremely heavy file. I also created a new chest piece from scratch, since the previous one was giving me problems I wasn’t able to fix.
Here’s the body of the character, beneath all the armor:

His helmet:

His chest piece:
Arm piece:

And boots:

I decided to go for blue-ish grey tones, along with the red accents, to match the style that my group desired. Here’s an image I had as a reference - https://goo.gl/Tbz2sF
Along with the 3D model, I also designed the armor for the HUD of the game:

Last, but not least, I created the poster for the game with the logo and a screenshot of the game that my group took for this purpose. Here it is:

MOJO yesterday went great. People seemed to really enjoy our game, which I have to say is a great feeling. I didn’t get to play all the other games that were there, but from what I did get to play there were many great games!
